RENAULT NISSAN AUTOMOTIVE INDIA Pvt. Ltd.,manufacturing facility near Chennai, India is the largest single PEB building the world, and the first of its kind in India utilize PEB structures totally for an automobile plant. The PEB covers a floor area of over 310,000 sqm with a tonnage of over 20,000 MT including process beams. Our scheme of alternate technical offer vs the original scope of work reduced the tonnage by 4110 MT which was the winning factor for getting the order.

The maximum width of the building is 260 m with a single slope of 130 m. It has been designed taking into account thermal stress due to temperature effect. The building is designed to support all process equipments and conveyors. This design allows incorporation of all future expansions.

Taking into consideration the massive size of the project, it was divided into different phases for execution and erection. Detail drawings, fabrication and erection were made to suit the site progress. Different parts of the building were made in a synchronized way, so that that the elements could be erected stage by stage, once they reached the site. Bar coding helped with the control and traceability of different parts with aspecial focus on the precision of child parts manufactured to interface/suit the designed profile and special training was given to the erection team for execution under rainy/seasonal conditions.

The entire structure was designed and fabricated in accordance to AWS D1.1 welding standards. Product quality was certified by TOSHIBA Consulting Services as 3rd party certification. This was the first time a combined erection procedure was successfully implemented at RENAULT – NISSAN site. Two rafters, purlins, sag rods and bracing were all assembled on the ground and lifted as a single lift. The maximum span of the building is 260m (with a single slope of 130m). A single building of size 220m x 483m with process beams carrying 120 kg/sqm loading and mezzanine - trim & chassis building - 9780 MT.

Akira Sakurai, managing director and CEO of Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Limited, in his inaugural address said: “The opening of any new plant is a significant achievement, but the speed and quality of execution at this plant in Chennai has been exceptional.”

The main structures were completed in a record time of 7 months and two buildings were handed over in full in December 2009. The site was completely hand over to the client in February 2010. The inauguration of the facility was carried on 18 March 2010 by Hon. Chief Minister of the State of Tamil Nadu in the presence of dignitaries of state and the company.
